As I recently wrote a blog post “About me” CLICK TO READ, I thought it would also be a great idea to write a post about the place where I was born. I believe, this post will help to understand me better. I think that a place where you were born influences a lot the way you are.
I was born in Kaliningrad in 1998. As I was told by my parents, at that time the city didn’t look so great. There was a lot of destroyed buildings and the government just implemented the plan to renovate the city. Nineteen years later, as I look at Kaliningrad, I definitely see a lot of improvements made – the city now looks a lot more European. It was especially interesting to see new buildings and places for entertainment every time I would come from abroad. When you leave a place for a long time and come back to it after, you straight away notice all the changes that were made and create a comparison in your head, just like “before” and “after”.
I lived in Kaliningrad for ten years before moving abroad. I had a very happy life there with a lot of friends and loving parents that would take care of me, however after I moved and then came back to visit from time to time, I started noticing that Russia doesn’t suit me anymore. There is no doubt that Kaliningrad was evolving, but it wasn’t enough for me at some point. After moving to Barcelona and seeing the beauty of it, I simply lost all the interest in my hometown, more of all, I lost the interest in people that I used to be friends with.
The more I lived away, the more I understood how much I changed. I no longer had anything in common with my home. I got used to the modern buildings of Berlin (moved there after Barcelona), to shopping there, to the level of life, to my International friends – to everything. Now, every time I come to visit my family, who still lives in Kaliningrad, I don’t stay very long. My family is the only thing that keeps me coming.
I would love to know more about you! Share something about yourself in the comments section. Where did you grow up?
